Truck Accident Causes and Injuries

Truck drivers are required to drive for long hours and over great distances, often on a daily basis. Because the work is so grueling, both state and federal law regulate how often drivers are required to take breaks, how many hours they can drive per day, how cargo must be loaded, and how to safely operate a truck. Unfortunately, these rules are often ignored or overlooked, which can lead to major truck accidents that cause serious and even deadly injuries.

Common Causes

Some of the most common causes of truck accidents include:

  • Driver fatigue;
  • Improperly secured cargo;
  • Driving while intoxicated;
  • Distracted driving;
  • Speeding or driving aggressively; and
  • Mechanical failure.

While it is always dangerous for drivers to engage in these types of activities when operating a vehicle, it is especially dangerous for truck drivers because semi-trucks are so much larger than standard vehicles and when they crash it almost always causes serious damage. Truck crashes also often involve dangerous cargo, such as toxic materials, lumber, or heavy boulders, which can cause serious injuries if they come loose. For these reasons, injuries sustained in truck crashes tend to be particularly severe and include:

  • Spinal cord injuries, which are often the result of a person’s head snapping forward or backward after an impact, resulting in stretched ligaments and compressed discs;
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), which are caused by a blow to the skull, which in turn can result in swelling, paralysis, memory loss, permanent brain damage, and even death;
  • Crushed bones, which are usually caused by heavy debris and require multiple surgeries and the placement of metal rods to support the bone;
  • Burn injuries, which are often caused by exploding gas tanks or contact with dangerous chemicals; and
  • Organ damage, which is also more likely to occur in truck crashes due to the much larger size of the vehicles involved and, if left untreated, can be deadly.

 Federal Law

To help prevent these types of injuries, truck drivers must comply with regulations regarding:

  • Maximum driving time;
  • Procedures for cargo loading and unloading;
  • Vehicle weight limits;
  • Truck maintenance and repair;
  • Safety inspections; and
  • Driver qualifications.

A truck driver’s failure to adhere to these requirements can have devastating consequences. Fortunately, victims can collect compensation from the driver as well as any other negligent parties, who may include:

  • Trucking companies;
  • Cargo manufacturers;
  • Truck owners;
  • Vehicle parts distributors; and
  • Negligent mechanics.

Although no amount of compensation can bring back a loved one or return a permanently disabled individual to his or her former physical condition, collecting damages can go a long way towards helping truck accident victims begin the long road to recovery.
